This is such a beautiful and heart-breaking story that left me in tears at the end. Set between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, it follows the story of a little girl whose father works in the creation of the Oxford dictionary and who spends her childhood under his desk collecting forgotten words. As she grows up, we see her falling in love, getting involved in the fight for women’s rights, facing loss, and suffering grief, while she creates her own dictionary of lost words.
Beautifully-written, well-researched, and detailed, this is a story of family, love, friendship, and heartbreak that I still keep thinking about.
