I really enjoyed this novel thanks to its many twists and the fantastic protagonist, a young woman in search of adventure, determined, resourceful, and witty.
Following the death of her father, Anne Beddingfeld is left with almost nothing, just the pity of those who admired her father and wish to help her. She accepts the invitation of her father’s lawyer to stay at his home in London while she looks for a job, but all she wants is adventure and excitement and it seems she finds it when she witnesses a man falling on the rails and dying at the tube station. The police is convinced that it was an accident, but Anne saw the man being scared by someone behind her.
Was it the man in the brown suit who then pretended to examine the body and left behind a cryptic note? Anne thinks that this death is connected to the woman found murdered in an empty house and she decides to investigate. That’s how she finds herself spending all her money for a ticket to South Africa where she finds the adventures she so craved and also some near-death experiences!
